Three-dimensional (3D) Wire Frame and Wire Surface plots are trivariate plots in which a comparison of 3 measures is presented. In both a 3D Wire Frame or Wire Surface graph, the Z values in a matrix determine a surface of X and Y grid lines. For the Wire Surface graph, secondary lines are placed between the grids. These types of plots are often referred to as mesh plots or wire mesh surfaces.

3D Wire Frame Plot

3D Wire Frame Mesh Graph

This graph displays a 3D Wire Frame plot superimposed over a 3D Color Fill Surface plot. The graph shows a simulated surface plot of the activation energy, as a function of temperature and extent of conversion, for a process involving two parallel reactions.

3D Wire Surface Plot

3D Wire Surface Graph

This 3D Wire Surface plot was created from the matrix data used in the 3D Wire Frame graph above. Note the main difference between the wire frame and wire surface is the introduction of a second grid color.

3D Wire Frame/3D Wire Surface Properties:

The properties of 3D Wire Frame and 3D Wire Surface graphs are broken up into two tabs in Origin's Plot Details dialog: the Wire Frame tab and the Side Walls tab.

Wire Frame settings:

  • Enable X and/or Y grids
  • Grid Thickness
  • Grid Color(s) (can be set to Single or Dual Color mode)
  • Back Color (for grid when both the front and back of the surface are visible)

Side Walls settings:

  • Enable/Disable Side Walls
  • X Side Wall Color
  • Y Side Wall Color
